Inspiring choices and progression to HE

Writing references and personal statements

Wednesday 29 November 2017 13:45 - 14:45
Breakout session
This session will be of most benefit to beginners and those with an intermediate level of knowledge.

Summary

An effective reference can often prove to be the crucial factor in a successful UCAS application, providing the added value necessary for an application to stand out from the crowd. It is also the chance to level the playing field, and highlight any disadvantages a student has faced.

The importance of the personal statement cannot be overstated. Students need to learn how to write about themselves in a positive and persuasive way, in order to achieve their goals. Time and again, feedback from HE admissions tutors indicates that a personal statement could help or hinder an application to a competitive course.

Packed with tips and with interesting examples of references and personal statements, this session will allow plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will:

  • explore ideas to help applicants get started.
  • learn what university admissions tutors are looking for.
  • learn about what to include, and what to avoid.
