Inspiring choices and progression to HE
Lucy Backhurst
Biography
Lucy has over 20 years’ experience working in student recruitment, widening participation, and undergraduate admissions in higher education. At the start of her career, she spent three years with the best job in the world, roaming the country advising sixth formers and college students about their university choices. In 1995, she became the first PARTNERS Programme Co-ordinator at Newcastle University, and set up the nationally recognised PARTNERS Programme – a supported entry route into Newcastle University for students from under-represented groups.
After a series of roles relating to relationship building between universities and schools and colleges, Lucy was appointed to her current role in 2008 as Head of Recruitment and Admissions at Newcastle University, which included responsibility for UK recruitment, widening participation, and undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. As part of this role she led the development of Realising Opportunities, an award winning national partnership of 14 leading universities that aims to ensure that ability should be able to access opportunity, regardless of circumstance. Last year, she took on temporary responsibility for international recruitment. Her role is interesting, challenging and diverse, and made even more so by a rapidly changing national and global political landscape.
Lucy loves food and drink, most forms of outdoor activity and travelling to hard to reach places.
